Anyone who has ridden a bike to go motocross racing knows that the level of dedication, discipline and physical fitness in the sport is very high. The question remains, is motocross then the toughest sport in the world? How does it fare compared to boxing, football and many other endurance-testing sport activities? The answers will of course differ with each individual that you ask, but let us explore this notion further here.
Physical and lifestyle demands
There are many demanding aspects in motocross; the first of course is on the physical side. The sport is meant for athletes who have trained long and hard, achieving the proper body mass, muscular structure and overall bodily strength. The recommended proper diet for riders should be strictly observed, as are exercises for both physical and mental preparation.
One does not simply become a rider without absolute dedication to the sport and the many changes it can bring to a person’s lifestyle. It isn’t all about being hard either as flexibility, balance and agility are needed in order to successfully navigate the many various twists and turns. You will likely be jostled every which way, whether you’re actually sitting down or standing up and balancing your way with firm control.
All these aspects does not even yet take into account the fact that you need proper dexterity to control and maneuver a sleek piece of machinery that can weigh over 200 pounds or more. The body is said to be a machine in itself as well, with a leanness and stamina that need to be achieved before you can even consider racing. Every muscle will need to be called upon on the track with each move made.
Handling proper gear and safety
Gearing up for motocross is no simple matter. Before you can begin racing, you need to make sure that you are dressed the right way to avoid serious physical damage for as much as possible. When you’re done strapping on your helmet, gloves, boots, the various chest and back protections, goggles and many other types of gear, your body will have to adjust to the stringency, especially as you will be riding on two wheels with all these gear on you.
Mental preparation and focus
A rider’s state of mind is another aspect that requires extensive training. Positive thinking, calmness and focus are just some of the things that need to be ingrained on oneself before taking off on the racetrack. Together with the top speeds and tests of physical endurance, your mind will be constantly processing each and every challenge you meet on the field.
Strategy requires intense alertness and focus, and your thought process will have to lead to quick thinking as you whip around the track. While performing one move, you will have to think about the next one while dealing with various vulnerabilities, from the constant challenge of other riders to the different hurdles along the way.
There have been studies conducted in the past that go deeper on the physicality required on the sports deemed the most demanding. These include football, basketball, track racing and others. Among these, riders have been found to have the top level of physical fitness.
These studies will of course not necessarily be the end of the matter, as many types of sports still demand a heavy toll on the body, not to mention the mental energy needed. But for those who are bold enough and have committed their lives to motocross racing, there is no doubt that they are as tough as tough could ever be.
